The research estimated the amount of carbon flux due to forest cover change by combining satellite image information and terrestrial field-based inventory. The study area is located at a tropical forest region of southeastern Bangladesh. It used Landsat TM and ETM+ satellite images and terrestrial sample based inventory data. The result is quite useful to understand the terrestrial carbon dynamics and global climate change.

Carbon emissions from tropical deforestation and regrowth based on satellite observations for the 1980s and 1990s.

Carbon fluxes from tropical deforestation and regrowth are highly uncertain components of the contemporary carbon budget, due in part to the lack of spatially explicit and consistent information on changes in forest area. We estimate fluxes for the 1980s and 1990s using subpixel estimates of percent tree cover derived from coarse (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Advanced Very ...

Tropical forest carbon assessment: integrating satellite and airborne mapping approaches

Large-scale carbon mapping is needed to support the UNFCCC program to reduce deforestation and forest degradation (REDD). Managers of forested land can potentially increase their carbon credits via detailed monitoring of forest cover, loss and gain (hectares), and periodic estimates of changes in forest carbon density (tons ha−1). Satellites provide an opportunity to monitor changes in forest c...

Strategies for monitoring tropical deforestation using satellite data

Measuring the aerial extent of tropical deforestation for other than localized areas requires the use of satellite data.We present evidence to show that an accurate determination of tropical deforestation is very di cult to achieve by a ‘random sampling’ analysis of Landsat or similar high spatial resolution data unless a very high percentage of the area to be studied is sampled. In order to a...

High resolution analysis of tropical forest fragmentation and its impact on the global carbon cycle

Deforestation in the tropics is not only responsible for direct carbon emissions but also extends the forest edge wherein trees suffer increased mortality. Here we combine high-resolution (30 m) satellite maps of forest cover with estimates of the edge effect and show that 19% of the remaining area of tropical forests lies within 100 m of a forest edge. The tropics house around 50 million fores...

A multi-stage inventory scheme for REDD inventories in tropical countries

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) is an international effort to create a financial value for the carbon stored in forests, offering incentives for developing countries to reduce emissions from forest and invest in low-carbon paths to sustainable development. Of critical importance is the estimation of carbon stocks in forests and their dynamics. The paper prese...
